Ecological report

In 2006, we registered the following environment influence parameters:

  • Volumes and types of pollution emitted to air In 2006 total emission volume (excluding CO2) amounted to 9,928.3 tons (t) of dust and gas pollution.
The following types of pollution had the biggest share in the total emission to air:
sulphur dioxide (SO2)
carbon monoxide (CO)
nitric oxides
flue dusts
ammonia
urea dust
nitrogen fertiliser dust
phthalic acid anhydride
2,958.0 t/year
2,849.6 t/year
2,766.3 t/year
541.8 t/year
392.5 t/year
171.3 t/year
140.8 t/year
65.5 t/year

Total emission of the abovementioned types of pollution amounted to 9,885.8 t/year, which constitutes 99.57% of emission. Emission of remaining 20 types of pollution amounted to 42.5 t/year, which constitutes 0.43% of emission.

Moreover, 1,041,729.5 t of carbon dioxide was emitted.

The per cent share of the major types of pollution has been presented in the diagram below.

The emission level in 2006 has been quantified on the basis of:
  • permanent emission measurements in the Company heat and power plant,
  • periodic measurements of the main technological sources,
  • balances prepared on the basis of technological indicators for the remaining emission sources.

  • Volume and type of intake water
In 2006, 6,534.5 thousand m3 of water was taken in.

Volumes of different water types were as follows:

water from the Odra river619.8 thousand m3
water from the Łącza stream2,157.4 thousand m3
water from Tertiary reservoirs854.8 thousand m3
water from Quaternary reservoirs1,421.1 thousand m3
water from KPP Kotlarnia1,481.4 thousand m3

The per cent share of the abovementioned water types in the total water intake has been presented in the diagram below:

Waters are used for: power, production, economic, social, and technological purposes.

Due to various applications, the following types of water are manufactured:
  • industrial water
  • drinking water
In the Water Treatment Station for Power Purposes objects
- pre-cleaned water
- softened water
- partially demineralised water
- demineralised water

The biggest water recipients are power installations (ca. 50% of water intake) and fertiliser installations (ca. 35%).
  • Volume of sewage and pollution load discharged to the Odra river
In 2006, the total volume of discharged treated sewage was 3,416.1 thousand m3.

Major types of pollution discharged in ZAK S.A. sewage are:
organic compounds marked with the COD parameter203.5 t
nitrogen234.8 t
chlorides798.7 t
sulphates 470.6 t470.6 t

The following additional parameters are monitored in the discharged sewage: sewage reaction, BOD5, ammonia nitrogen, nitrate nitrogen, suspension, ether extract, phosphorus, formaldehyde, volatile aromatic hydrocarbon (BTX), volatile phenols, petroleum derivatives and metals.
  • Types and volumes of generated and stored wastes, packaging

In 2006, regarding the waste management:
generated119,413.5 t of wastes
designated to storage8,388.6 t of wastes
transferred to reclamation91,275.8 t of wastes
including ash-slag mixture85,366.8 t
transferred to neutralisation5.3 t of wastes

The following types of wastes had the biggest share in the total waste generation:
ash-slag mixtures90,102.78 t
debris wastes20,618.00 t
wastes from tank cleaning2,991.20 t
slimes from biological sewage treatment1,658.30 t
steel scrap1,462.12 t
distillation residue bottoms519.32 t
slimes from sewage treatment other than biological496.79 t
oils from the sewage treatment process392.36 t

The per cent share of the major types of wastes has been presented in the diagrams below.

Together with the finished products, ZAK S.A. has also put packaging on the home market. This packaging is intended for recycling or reclamation.

Quantity of packaging put on the home market together with the finished products – 1,428.8 t
including: plastic packaging – 1,335.9 t
wooden pallets – 92.9 t

By ongoing cooperation with the recovery organisation, the regulation level of the packaging recycling (22% for plastic packaging) and the regulation level of the reclamation (43% for all packaging) have been achieved.
